THIRTY WORKMEN KILLED.
CAUSE OF THE DISASTER. IMPOTENT RESCUERS. Received September 1, 4.20 p.m. NEW YORK, August 31. Details of the St. Lawrence bridge disaster show that * out of 92 workmen about to leave the bridge in the evening 31 perished. Apparently the causo of the disaster was the overloading by a construction train, lbe driver felt a “jerk and shut on steam, but tlio engine continued its journey. The structure dipped at the end and then collapsed. The awful completeness of the catastrophe paralysed everybody in tlio vicinity. Anxious crowds heard the groans and shrieks of a number of the victims pinned in the wreckage near the shore throughout the night, but were iniable to rescue or relieve their sufferings until daylight. Meanwhile the rising tide drowned many. The collapse means a financial lose pt L4UU,000, and two years’ work is undone.
