DEATH OF THE HON. WALTER JOHNSTON.

Special to Times. "WELLINGTON, September 1. The Hon. AValter Johnston died at his residence in "Wellington on Saturday afternoon, after a very brief illness. He was attacked by influenza and bronchitis, which developed into bronchial pneumonia. On Friday three doctors were in attendance upon him, and one remained with liim all Friday night. Yesterday morning he rallied somewhat, but tlie rallv was followed by a relapse, and lie passed away yesterday afternoon. The deceased was horn in London on August 10th. 1839, and arrived in Wellington with liis parents early in 1812. On February 24th, 1868', lie married Cecilia Augusta, second daughter of Mr. Forster Goring, Wellington, who was the fourth son of Sir Charles Forster Goring, Bart., of Higliden, Sussex. For several years lie was a member of tlie firm of Johnston and Co., of Wellington. He sit for Manawatu in the House of Representatives from 1871 to 1884. He was Postmaster-General in the Atkinson Government from March, 1881. to -October, 1882, and Minister for Public Works. from April, 1881 (in addition to his other office), to November. 1883, and a member of the Cabinet without portfolio till the Ministry resigned in 1884. Tlie family has many connections in Wellington city and province.
