The cemetery reserve, recommended by the Borough Council as a site for a gaol in preference to part of tho railway reserve, contains eight acres and is situated adjacent to tlie quarantine area, upjier Childcr’s Road. The Council’s expression of protest against the erection of a gaol near tho Esplanade, is supported by many townspeople. As the cemetery reserve cannot he used for its original purpose, being now moulded in the Borough boundaries, it is claimed that there is no reason why it should not he utilised by the Prisons Department. The area would allow of decent sized grounds for the establishment, instead of the gaol being “cribb’d, cabined and confined” on three acres contiguous to a popular resort.
AVith regard to utilising AVaihirere stone, championed by Air. Geo. Grant, C.E., an error occurred in the figures set out in Air. Grant’s statement (published yesterday). Included in the estimate of £1,131 per mile of tramway to connect AVaihirere quarry with tho railway service, the formation work should have been stated as 80 'chains at 10s, total £4O, not £llO as inadvertently published. In connection with his contention that' 20,000 yards of metal was required yearly. Air. Grant pointed out that Patutahi was only workable (for ordinary wheel traffic) about 380 days in the year, to illustrate his argument that to meet a demand of 20,000 yards a year it would he necessary to transport 111 yards a day, an impossible feat under present conditions. On the other hand, he said, AA’aihirere could be worked 290 days in the year, so that transport would he relieved, as the daily output would not need to exceed 70 yards.
