THE WORK OF THE SESSION

A GREAT’ DEAL STILL TO DO

(Special to Times.) AVISLLINCTON, August 26. “So much to do—so little done describes the .position iiv regard to the present session up to flute. -It is understood, however, that tho House pi Representatives will begin work m real earnest. The tariff proposals will occupy the attention of members this week, and in addition t-horo will bo an Imprest Supply Bill. It will probably take the House several ■weeks to get the tariff proposals finally settled. Then there will ho about a week’s talk on the second reading of tile I,and Bill, the committee stage of which will also tako probably from throe to four weeks. The Taxation and the Endowment Bills will also occupy considerable time. AVliat with Departmental Estimates, tho Public AVorks Estimates, tlio Arbitration Act Amendment, and various other policy Bills, there is work enough to keep Parliament sitting till Christmas. Jt is, however, already quite evident that a good deal of the political cargo will have to be jettisoned, for there will he the. greatest difficulty in keeping members in AVollington after the first week in November. To-day Alinisters were a good deal occupied with deputations. A largo number are away for the weekend, and there has been some junketing on the part of a small -hand of them in the Southern Wairarapa district. Members, I understand, were greatly impressed with the possibilities of that large and very fertile district. In tho afternoon Dr. and Airs. Findlay gave an “at home,” to which 360 guests wore invited. The Premier and Lady AA’ard, the Leader of tho Opposition, and members of both Houses and their wives, and others were the guests of tho AttorneyGeneral and his wife. The function was a most enjoyable one.
