STEVEDORES’ HOURS
Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. An award was filed to-day in the case brought by the Lyttelton Stevedores’ Union of Workers asking that the Union Steamship Co., the Westport Coal Co. and other firms be brought within tlip terms of an industrial agreement at- present existing between the Union "and several firms, and that the agreement be constituted an award. The following it a summary of the conditions awarded: —Ordinary hours to bo from 8 a.m. 5 p.m. (meal hour noon to 1 p.m.), all otlier time to he classified as overtime ; wages for stevedore and general cargo work to be Is 3d per hour (day time) and 2s per hour (overtime); a penny per hour is added for work with New Zealand coal for all workers except trippers; 3d per hour for working Newcastle coal for shovellers and carriers; Id extra for bull rope, tramway- and winchmen and 3d per hour is added to the usual rates for trimming coal in bunkers; overhauling work to be paid for at the usual rates and Id per hour to be added for handling frozen goods; to the wages of men in freezing chambers, men on stages and men feeding, shoot men, engaged at Lyttelton to work cargo 1 ' at other ports are to receive 10s per day, during their absence from Lyttelton, Sundays excluded, and if the rate of pay in such other ports is higher than prescribed by tlie award such men are to bo paid on the high scale; men called to work between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., and not required to work, to receive one hour’s pay between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., 2 hours’ pav double overtime to bo paid for work oil Sunday, Xmas Day and Good Friday ; for attendance on steamer lines on these days ordinary overtime to be paid with a minimum of 4s for the iob, New Year’s Day, , Anniversary Day, Good Friday. Easter Monday, King s Birthday, Xmas Day, Labor Day, Boxing Day and the' annual picnic day to be holidays; overtime rates to be paid for work done bctween_7 a.m. and 8 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. (meal hours) ; men shall not be called on to work more than 6 hours between meals; the usual preference claims included, and tlie award comes into force on September Ist. 1907, and continues till April 30. 1909. 1
