Iu order to mako arrangements for the Hospital Social a meeting of ladies' was held, yesterday afternoon at Townley’s HalL Tho Mayoress presided, and though tho attendance was not large there was no lack of enthusiasm in a good cause. After discussing ways and means to ensure tho success of tho undertaking, the ladies’ committee adjourned for a fortnight. Ladies willing to assist aro asked to attend.
The Post Office reported yesterday morning that owing to line interruptions tliero would be a delay of some hours on telegrams for the South Island, except the Nelson anil Blenheim districts. The delay was then thought likely to be serious. All the East Coast, wires were down between Waiau and Kaikoura owing to a snowstorm. AVellington had only one wire to Christchurch, via Grey mouth. Later it was reported that all wires -were working as usual. A meeting of drovers of the district will be convened for Saturday afternoon, at the Farmers’ Union Club rooms, to discuss tho formation of an Association. It is proposed to fix an annual subscription and with the proceeds pay lor the services of a secretary who will watch the drovers’ interests, keep a record of the times at which members aro open for eilgagements, receive messages from stodkowners in want of men and generally act. as an intermediary between employers and drovers. . This method, it is understood, is preferred to the proposal- that a register be kept by tho Provincial Secretary of the Farmers’ Union.
The following letter from Mr. R. L. Mestayer has been received by the Borough Council: —“Referring to my letter of Julie 24th last, my attention has been called to a report made by tho Borough Engineer to your Council that it would take six months to get the information I require. I presume that Mr. Gibbon meant that it would take him that time to get the information himself in addition to his regular wo k. All that I require could bo obtained in a month of fair weather, or allowing for broken weather in six weeks in the field at the outside. To prevent delays and furnish your Council with a report on the subject at tho earliest pbssiblo datei I am prepared to send my assistant to Gisborno to take the levels and obtain all tho information required, and will supply vour Council with a full report for the sum of' £260.”.
