GENERAL TELEGRAMS.

Press Association. AUCKLAND, August 18. News from Tonga by tho Navua states that the locally-owned schooner Saloto is considerably overdue from Nukualofa to Niue. The vessel sailed on July 12th, and the wind being fair, and the passage at the very outside should have been covered m four days. Up to August 4th there was no news of the vessel at the latter island. It is feared that she has foundered. On board were a crew of 10, besides some 60 native passengers. She was sailed by Captain A. W. McKay, one of the owners. HA.WEKA, August 18.

A native named James Haddon, aged 36, who wilfully shot himself in the stomach on Friday evening, died this morning. The report of Mr. Black, the Electrical Engineer, regarding the proposed tramway connection of Hawera and Kaupokouui, is considered eminently satisfactory. The scheme is regarded as practicable and payable. It is hoped that the line will solve the difficulty of obtaining a main' south road, which has been a heavy burden owing to tlie failure of an agreement between the Hawera County Council and the AVaimate Itoad Board, as to issues to be placed before a Commission respecting the Road Board’s liability regarding the upkeep of roads. The council lias decided to erect tollgates on the roads leading from the AVaimate district to the railway. NAPIER, August 18. Mr. E. J. Beresford, a well-known business man in town, died rather suddenly last evening. He was tak-

oil ill ou Friday night, and after being removed to a private hospital died, it is understood, from kidney disease. AATELLINGTON, August 18.Tho annual mooting of tho New Zealand Employers’ Federation has been postponed from the 21st to tho 28th instant.
