ROTORUA RAILWAY SMASH
CONFLICTING EVIDENCE. Press Association.
ROTORUA, August 14. In the railway accident inquiry the evidence of the Pataruru station-mas-ter, R. E. Robertson (Westinghouse brake expert), and Constable Spellman was taken. Taylor, driver of the first engine, recalled, gave further evidence, but nothing new was elicited. The-evidence was very conflicting. The enginedrivers and staff declare that the brakes were puit on before the engines uncoupled. The passengers say that ho brakes were applied. The inquest was closed at a quarter to 5. The jury retired, and returned in an hour and a half wit 1 a verdict that Guard Lowe’s death was the result of injuries received through an accident on a Rotorua goods train on August 3rd, owing to vehicles receding from the vicinity of tho forty-eight-mile peg, when 'the engines were detached through a partial failure of the second engine. The evidence was too conflicting to justify the jury in arriving at a decision why. tho vehicles receded. -
