BACKBLOCKS BRIDGES.

MEETING OF KARAKA RESIDENTS. A meeting was held at Te Karnka oil Saturday afternoon for the purpose of considering the question of bridging the Rangitira and Pulia rivers.—Mr. Allen was voted to the chair and explained that tho bridges wore needed to take the press of heavy traffic off tho cliff road, which at present was almost impassable.— Mr. Lewis said be got an estimate of £12,000 for the two bridges.—Mr. Pottle said the opinion was that the new cliff road would not bo satisfactory’.—Mr. W. D. Lysnar said the rate on the part of the riding which would benefit would be oiie-sixth of a penny.—Mr. Lewis said, the cost of maintaining the cliff road would, pay interest oil the bridge loan.—Mr. Jackson said t'ho proposed rate was large, as the sheep-farmers would derive absolutely no benefit from the bridges.—lt was decided to get estimates from the County Council for the two bridges alternately in wood and steel; that- the Government be asked to carry out protective'works it. the foot of the cliff road; that those present form a permanent committee to see the matter through ; and that a further meeting on the matter be bold on Saturday next. .
