WANGANUI, August 6. A large and enthusiastic meeting was held this afternoon to consider tho best method of recognising Wm. Webb’s achievement in winning the sculling championship of the world. It was decided to inaugurate a. national testimonial in the shape of presenting the champion with a sec tion and house or some other substantial gift. -It was decided that an appeal be made throughout the colony and that communications be addressee! to the Mayors of the various boroughs also that the Government be asked to give a State subsidy. £l5O was sub scribed in the room. In addition h was resolved to give Webb a publicreception and present him with an illuminated address.

WELLINGTON, August 6. A movement is afoot in Welling ton to organise a reception and presentation to Webb, the champion oarsman, on his return from Australia.

WEBB FINDS AMPLE BACKING. SYDNEY, August 6. Following up Mr: Field’s remarks at the paying over of the stakes ga thering, Mr. Corby, manager foi Webb informed the press that a JNen Zealander was prepared to make a private match between W ebb and Charles Towns for £2OOO a side.
