The United States District Court .it Chicago imposed a maximum penalty for 1462 violations of the Elkins anti-rebate law which the Standard Oil Company committed in conjunction with the Chicago Alton Railway Comiiany. Judge Landis denounced •is an abhorrent heresy the defendmts’ claim that they had the right to make secret agreements respecting railway rates. .. Execution has been stayed for 60 days to allow The company to appeal to the United States Circuit Court. Judge Landis regretted he was unable to send the violators of the law" to prison since "their action wounded society more deeply than counterfeiters’ coin or mailbag thieves. Mr. Rockefeller was playing golf when informed of the decision. He was quite unmoved and resinned the game.
