The only French horse to win. the Derby is Gladiateur, who won in 1866. Since then unsuccessful efforts have been made by Insulaire (second to Sefton, 1878), Governeur (second to Common, 1891), Bucentaure (third to Sir Hugo, 1892), Vinicius (second to Rock Sand, 1903), and Jardy (second to Cicero, 1905). The State Intelligence -Department has issued a return showing the progress of New South Wales during the past 10 years. The population increased for 1,278,970 to 1,530,984; the total area under cultivation from 2,043,733 acres to 3,521,842; and tho wheat production from 8,853,445 bushels to 21,817,938 bushels. The value of the mining production increased from £4,431,643 to £7,912, 916. The deposits in the bank 'of issue increased by £11,242,727. In the ten years the value of exports increased by £36,731,812 and imports by £22,6281039. Interviewed in Sydney, on the occasion of the recent, trouble with liis Grand Opera Company, Mr. Geo. Musgrove said :—‘ ‘it would seem that I am a very unpopular manager. Well I don’t know of any occasion on which I have not carried out my contract with every one of them, and liberally. Outsiders unacquainted with details of opera mangaement are easily misled by people, who tell them that they can go to Germany and get great artists for half-price; and they fondly imagine that there is an enormous fortune in an opera company made in Germany. A gentleman who proposes to put down £lO, 000 as a guarantee little knows what a little way that amount would go in this business, when it is taken into consideration that the material for installing and producing an opera season is not bo found in the Commonwealth. Tho plant, passages, etc., of tho present company cost at least £16,000 before the curtain was raised in Meloburne. However, 1 have made all iny contracts, with theatres and artists, and I am not to be deterred by the manoeuvres of one or two disloyal members of the company. Not only do I intend to carry out the present tour, but, as I announced from the stage on the closing night'in Melbourne, I intend to give a grand opera season in Australia every two years. This catalogue* of troubles may afford some idea of what an opera manager may encounter in his endeavour to give the people of Australia a. worthy production of- some of the best work of the great masters. The recent unfortunate incidents have cost me, at a reasonable estimate, fully £SOOO on the Sydney season.”
