RURAL TOPICS.
Tho Lyttelton Times says:—Thoro is a number of early lambs in the Canterbury district, and tho fine weather experienced of late has been acceptable, although too dry for the farmers. Fanners throughout tho district are bogiiinig to feel tho effects of the dry weather, and tho heavy frosts are playing havoc with tho eed.
A green tinge can already ho seoil ,m some of the paddocks on the Upper Wairarapa Plains, the young grain just coming through tile 'round. The majority of the land in that vicinity is still lying in tho furrows, and is likely to do so until the weather is more settled and gives the land a chance to dry, so as to enable it to be worked and sown.
Dal got y and Co. Ltd., landed at Wellington recently ex the Alonowai, four high-priced stud Shropshire ram hoggets. These sheep were procured at the recent Sydney Fair for Messrs. AlcKenzie and Lovelock, of Palmerston North. They are a very nice line, and wbll-grown, coming from the flocks of the noted Tasmanian breeders of Shropsliires, Alessrs Button Bros., of Oatlands, Tasmania. The sires of these sheep were all imported and prize-winners in Australia.
Tho dairy factory labor trouble in the Taranaki district has been finally settled, the men having agreed to waive their demand in regard to preference to Unionists. The land Times says that both parties are to be congratulated on this satisfactory conclusion of the negotiations, which at one stage appeared impossible of successful termination. Both the representatives of the factories and the Employers’ Union have disolaved a'conciliatory spJHt, with tho result that the men have secured a considerably improved basis of pay and hours of work, and tho factories have not~been called upon to meet demands which are extravagant or irksome. With the first labor revolt : n dairying settled, it may naturally be expected that the Auckland, Wellington, and Canterbury Unions will accept the same conditions.
