COLONIAL “RAGGING.”
RAILWAY CLEANERS AFFECTED. (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, last night. “Slurrying” or “bucking” in the engine sheds of the railway depart- | ment appears to be the equivalent I of “ragging” in the Army. In answer to a question in the House today the Promier said that from time to time complaints have been made that now cleaners have been interfered with and in every' case suitable punishment has been meted out to the offenders. ' In some cases dismissal has followed the, offence and tn others fines have been enforced. The Department uses its best efforts to prevent the practice and if every cleaner who is interfered with would report the matter there is no doubt that in time the practice would be stopped. In many cases, however, the fact of cleaners having been interfered with does not come under notice and those concerned escape minishment. Suitable action will, however, be taken in every case that is reported.
