WEDNESDAY, JULY 31 (Before Mr. Burton, S.M.) Drun ken ness.—Two first offenders "ere dealt; with in the usual manner. Sheep-dipping case. —A claim for £IOO was made by Herbert N. Watson, Onga Onga, sheepfarmer (Mr. Stock) against William White, Kaikora North, sheep-dip manufacturer (Mr. It. Nolan). The case is to be tried at Waipawa and the following depositions were made by Albert Joseph Eaulknor —I am a sheepfarmer residing at Wairakaia. In the year 100'! I was engaged by the late Mr. Price to take over the management of the Tangarewa station in Hawke’s Bay. I had had considerable experience in sheepfarming. On the 2nd March, 1904, I got n 81 rams and 230 rape lambs for dipping. I used White’s dip. A shepherd named Sim, " r ho had been on the place for several years, and who is a very careful and trustworthy man, mixed the dip under my supervision. Sim and I read the directions printed on the drum, and then the dip was mixed according to such directions. The rains were in the yards about 2 hours before dipping. We dipped the rams first. After dipping, the rams were put into the paddock. Both ■ the yards and paddock were of grass, so that there was no chance of the rams standing in a yard with grass and the dip getting on to the grass and the rams being poisoned in that way. On the 4th of March I was riding through the rams and •noticed that about half of them were badly scalded. The rams were nearly all Komneys. Four or five of them h-ij died as a result of the dipping, anc. six were rendered-useless. None of tlio lambs were scalded. I was certain that the directions as to mixing were carefully carried out.—Cross” examined by Mr. Nolan for defendant, lie said he was sure he had followed the printed directions on the drum. Had used the same dip five or six years previously. He was certain that Mr. Sim made no mistake in mixing the dip. The rams should be dipped in weaker dip than the other sheep. The rams were not moved for two or three hours after dipping, and were then only moved about a mile and a- haif. Did not think that there was any indication on the drums saying that, the cup should bo weaker for rams
