CARRIERS v. BUTCHERS.

At Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon the. Carriers met and defeated the Butchers by 6 points to nil. Phe game all through was of a very interesting nature and great applause greeted the efforts of some of the players to fight their way across the coveted line. The tackling of both ceams was very deadly and at times the spectators were treated to an exnibition of “no man standing.” The Butchers won the toss and elected to play with the sun at their backs. Corbett qpt the ball rolling and McLachlan taking well sent it out of touch. From the line-out Cahill secured and made a strong dash down the field, his progress being brought to au abrupt conclusion by Wright, who collared him low in good style. Pollock marked from a high kick and found the line, but the Butchers came with a strong foot-rush and menaced the Carriers’ goal line. Smith, who was playing a good game, next secured possession and making a fine jinky run cleared his lino with a fine kick. From a scrum Smith sent the oval out to Pollock, who after making a nice straight run, transferred to Burke. This speedy wing three-quarter made no race of it and sprinting right round behind the posts scored a fine try. His kick at goal - struck the cross-bar. —Carriers 3 points, Butchers nil. Half time was called and a few minutes' breathing space was given the panting combatants. Upon lesumihg the Butchers, by a supreme effort 1 endeavored to equalise the score, but .the splendid defensive play of the Carriers’ backs kept them at a safe distance. Sceats, tlio Carriers’ skipper, initiated a fino dribbling rush in which ho was ably supported by Cahill and a score looked certain, but McLachlin proved equal to tho occasion and shifted play out side tho danger zone with a good line kick. Bornand next came into prominence. Forging his way through his opponents he looked every inch a scorer, but ho was grassed when within 5 yards of tho line by Wright. From a scrum in front of the Butchers’ goal, tho ball was shot out’ to Pollock, who making" good uso of Ins pace, mad? a fino opening and unselfishly transferring to Buiko allowed tho latter to score his second try amidst applause. The kick at goal proved fruitless and tlio game ended. Carriers 6 points, Butchers nil. •Mr. Iviapara controlled the game in a masterly manner while Messrs. Kelly and Honzler carried onP the duties of tho lino umpires.
