RETURNED CONTINGENTERS.

MEETING 01' THE ASSOCIATION A meeting of the returned contingenters was held on Saturday evening in the Masonic Hotel. There were about lo present. Mr. Emerson was elected to the chair.

■ Mr. Geo. Carter, the secretary of die association, tendered his resignation at the meeting, stating that owing to living so far from town he was unable to devote the time lie would like to the affairs of the association. He begged that the meeting would favorably consider the

matter and appoint someone who lived in the town and could give more time to the work than lie was able to. Mr. Jas. Poynter proposed that Air. Carter’s resignation be accepted with regret, and this was seconded by Mr. Emerson and carried. Air. Graham Johnstone was elected secretary in Air. Carter’s place. The balance-sheet submitted to the meeting showed a debit balance of about £4 10s. It was resolved to start a now term and the members present forthwith paid their subscriptions. Air. Bo.vnter moved to the effect that in future all military distinctions of rajjk among all who had served in Sou til Africa should be droplied, and that all meet in common oil a civilian footing. He pointed out that after this lapse of time no useful purpose was served by keeping up the titular distinctions. After some discussion as to whether they should hold a military s ioi ts or a concert, it was decided that, the association should arrange a military concert. Air. Jas. Poynter was deputed to interview Airs. Howie and invoke her aid in arranging the function.
