THE TROOPER’S MEMORIAL.

The ilev. H. W. Williams has addressed tlie following letter to Mr. W. Miller, treasurer of the Memorial fund enclosing a donation:—“Dear Sir, —I have much pleasure in enclosing one guinea tor the rectification of the Cook Memorial. I feel strongly On tho subject. As chairman of the original committee 1 may say that the jilacing of the names in their present position was never contemplated by the committee, and never authorised. Many subscribers were justly indignant. The Bishop of Waiapu, an early subscriber to the fund, remarked that he would gladly have increased his subscription to have avoided such a bungle, and believed that many others felt with him. 1 hope as you have the matter in hand that you will also get the main inscription altered in conformity with the object of the movement, which is to mark the spot on which Captain Cook first landed, not to commemorate the date. Wishing you all success, I am vour truly, Herbert \V. Williams.'’

“P.S. —I may remark that I forwarded a letter in above terms to the Mayor on Tuesday, ns 1 was unable to attend the meeting, and was much disappointed that it was not road to the meeting or alluded to.—H.AY.W.” The following additional contributions have been received towards the fund:—Dr. Williams. £2 2s; J. G. Cox, £1 Is; Henry Tucker, £2 2s; Rev. H. AA’illiams, £1 Is.
