The Customs Department it appears, has lately been refusing to give importers an ordinary receipt for cheques in payment of duty, and lias incited ui>on getting a duplicate in red ink. This caused importers a great deal of extra labor, and representations were made to the Department by Mr. F. E. Baume, M.H.R., who has sent tho following telegram to Mr. Ivor Evans, Auckland:—“Minister informs me, in reply to my letter, that a form of recept. is being prepared which will be acceiitahle to both importers and the Department.”

Some ships’ biscuits of a very hard variety were brought to the Nautical Court to illustrate the fare the survivors of the s.s. ICia Ora existed upon. Bloore, who a few years ago was managing the country business of the Intercolonial Land Agency here, and afterwards went to Wanganui to Ashton and Co., stock and station agents, then farming on his own account for some time, has purchased the Gisborne business of Messrs. Kerr and Carter, which he has been managing for some months past, having returned to Poverty Bay as offering the best field for investment and greater opportunities than any other district in N.Z. As outside salesman for Macdonald, Wilson, and Co., Wellington, and head of good firms ill Australia, and having also travelled over uud resided in all parts of N.Z., his practical knowledge of land values will stand him in good stead in the business of land, stock, and business salesman, which he will conduct here.
