DEBATING SOCIETY.
There was a good gathering at the Choral Hall last evening when the question “Is Disarmament Possible” was spiritedly debated. Mr. Dawson, a new arrival from laranaki, took the affirmative, and Mr. Bloore the negative. Mr. Dawson said he was very fortunate in having the affirmative as lie would be speaking according to his i lews. H.e considered disarmament essential for the welfare of mankind and quoted views of many of the leading statesmen of the world as to the possibility of international arbitration being made a medium for the settlement of disputes. Mr. Dawson, who is a logical speaker, dealt ably with the subject at some length and ujion resuming his seat was warmly applauded. Mr. Bloore, in replying, endeavored to prove that some of his opponent’s arguments would not stand the test of practicability, however much their desirability could be supported. He quoted history and sought to show that, under present conditions the movement for disarmament could not be a success.
A large number took part in the subsequent discussion, some attention being directed to the view that a broader and more humanitarian feeling amongst the nations must be the precursor of a cessation of armaments. There were ‘keen arguments adduced on both sides. "Finally n show of hands disclosed a victory" for the affirmative division, with several votes majority.
