"APPEARANCES ARE OFTEN DECEPTIVE,”
Tho proverb, “Appearances are often deceptive,” was forcibly illustrated by two little anecdotes that Archdeacon Averill told against himself at a church mooting in Christchurch. Tho revoraiid gentleman related that some years ago, when he was in Springfield, the township was thrown in a terrific state of excitement by tho prospective visit of a circus from the AVost Coast. The speaker having lost his straw hat, wont into' a shop to buy a new one, and casually remarked to tho woman in charge, “Oh I see you are having a visit' from a circus?” “Yes,” answered tho woman in a perplexed manner, “but you belong to it, don’t you ?” The other incident took place in Scotland._ The Archdeacon was a passenger in a coasting vessel, and one day he landed with a companion at one of the islands. He was wearing a small peculiarly shaped hat, which had resulted in his face assuming a rod and weather-beaten appearance. A minister whom they' met thought ho would improve the shilling hour by presenting each of the visitors with n tract. He handed one (kept for general nurposes evidently) to the Archdeacon’s friend, and after gazing embarrassingly at the Archdeacon’s nose, delved inner recesses of his poeket for a few seconds, and presented one to the Archdeacon himself. On the uotsido was the inscription, “A lew points oip.drunk- ; on ness. ,s 7 -> : '‘
