LORD PLUNKET AND HIS MASONIC TREASURES.
During his recent official visit to the Gisborne Masonic Lodges tho M.W.G.M. His Excellency the Governor (says the “New Zpahiii'd Craftsman”), humorously related liis woes ill connection with the. care of Ins case of Masonic clothing # on the journey by road from Napier.. The. Grand Secretary, true to the traditions of his" ancestors, had cannily informed {us Expediency that the clothing was valued at £7O or £'Bo, and consequently Oil the rough overland trip from Wairoa the case containing it was a source of continual anxiety to him. Ho had been complimented on his courage and determination in persevering in spite of the terrible date of the roads, but he said there was :io great merit in that, hut lie did consider that the manner in which lie stuck to that £BO case was worthy of tho highest praise. On one occasion, when they came L where a culvert used to be, and had to leave the coach and tramp through mud and slush, which reached the knees, lie was luirrijipd ft) find on safely reaching terra flrma that the £BO package was left behind, and, after its recovery, lie registered a.mental vow not to lose sight of it again, and oil shortly after reaching another washout- he shouldered the case and struggled through triumphantly. His secretary, who had got through with a small bag, congratulated himself on at any rate having a dry change, but bis Excellency, ruefully regarding flip jlistur'o and valuable case, remarked that though the contents were probably dry, he was very much afraid they would not give him a very comfortable change.
