GRAVEL. Cr. Sheridan suggested that a committee inspect the Itaiteratahi River, about 13 miles up, with a view to seeing if gravel supplies could noh be obtained there. He was told by a railway man that there was a shingle bed there. , ... The Mayor named a committee. Cr. Sawyer: There is no gravel there, only silt. , Cr. Whinray said he looked on tnis as a likely spot. He favored a rurtliei investigation. Cr. Williams said there was a pit beyond Mr. Williams’ place. The Mayor: It is absolutely worked out. , ~ Cr. Sawyer said there were thousands of yards on Wainui Beach, towards the island. He thought it; could be procured for 6s a yard. A Councillor: It may be got there in summer. Cr. Sawyer: It can be got at any time, and is of very fair quality. Crs. Somervell, Whinray, Sawyer, and Sheridan were appointed a committee to inspect the Kaiterata.ii shingle bed. Other suggested sites were left over for the time being. GENERAL.
The Harbor Board notified its willingness to shingle the wharf _ approach with Haiti shingle, provided the Council altered the grade.— Agreed to. Mr. Wm. Law the Council to form a road crossing, from the formed footpath on the north of Wainui-road, on which was his store and hoarding-house. The work would not be expensive, lie urged, and would serve the general public as well as residents on his side of the road! There is no footpath on . the south side, and a gravelled crossing would be a great convenience.—After some discussion the matter was referred to the Engineer. ' Messrs. Maekrell and Colley, contractors, asked permission to block in a part of the roadway in front of Messrs. Williams and Slierratt’s new buildings, during the period of construction. —Granted on the usual conditions. - Mr. A. E. Matthews wrote: —“.Referring to. the Waimafca River supposed erosion on the west end of Score-street, Haiti, I am instructed by my principal to sts: -> that he will
be satisfied if the Council will take over,the road from Harris-street to the eastern boundary of section 19, as marked on accompanying plan, with a right "to the Council to drain through to the river.” —In discussion councillors considered it would be advisable to take over the- road as far as the river. This course was adopted on the motion of Cr. Wliinra.v. seconded by Cr. Somervell. ■ The Inspector (Mr. Little) reported that tile contract for additions to the shelter sheds at tlie abattoirs was not yet commenced. A good deal of timber had been delivered, but other lengths required were not available in Gisborne.
Tlie A.M.P. Society, Wellington, forwarded cheque for £13,990 12s in connection with the waterworks loan. Coupons for £IOO9 7s 6d interest due •were enclosed.
