' The annual meeting of tlio Bowling Club will bo held about tho 18tli inst. The County Council has a notice in this issue relative to land proposed to bo taken. A progressive eucliro party is to be held in St. Mary’s Schoolroom this evening. In another cplunm the Railway Department has an advertisement- tor the Gisborne Racing Club’s meeting. A prohibition order for the sixth time was granted against a. local resident, by the Magistrate yesterday morning. A native named Te Pirinihia Te Ehi was fined 10s and 2s costs or 48 hours imprisonment, at the Poiiee Court yesterday morning. A jockey named Tim Howard bad his collar-bone broken at lialf-past nine yesterday morning while schooling Vizier over hurdles. The Post Office advises that mails despatched from Melbourne via Brindisi On 29th May arrived in London on 30th June. The contractor' for the Roebtickroad bridge is making fail- progress. The street girders are all placed in position as far as the eighth day.

The barque Constance Craig from Newcastle grounded in the nnid when being towed in, and after a good deal of coal was lightered yesterday morning she was successfully berthed. At- the cookery room at the Technical School at 3 o’clock this afternoon the members of the School Committee and the Board of Governors will be entertained at afternoon tea by the young ladies of the cookery class. Mr J. R. Little, building inspector, reported to the Charitable Aid Board last evening that the erection of the isolation ward is satisfactorily, both workmanship and material being good. On liis recommendation payment of £235 was passed, and the deposit cheque will be returned to the contractor.

It is stated that a local medico, when asked' his opinion as to continuous service of the telephone exchange, expressed himself against the proposal, but' when it was suggested that the over-night connections would in all. probability be discontinued, he promptly altered the tone of liis views. As the waterworks are nearing completion, the Engineer was authorised last evening to make himself acquainted with the pijie line and the position of all scout valves. As Mr. Gibbon pointed out, it would be awkward to take over the works without any previous knowledge of the details.

At the invitation of the “Christchurch- Press” representative the members of the Borough Council and staff will assemble at 10 this morning to be photographed. Cr. Sheridan remarked upon the bareness of the walls in the Council Chamber; Councils in other places had an interesting portrait gallery of past Mayors and members. The enterprising firm of timber merchants, Messrs. 11. J. Peacocko and Co., have chartered the three scows, Welcome, Rambler, and Southern Isle, to ply between hero and Auckland. The vessels are at present in port, all having arrived within 24 hours of each other. As soon as tlio work of unloading is finished the scows proceed' north again for another shijiment of timber.

Thursday evening’s annual social ol the Druids promises to lie a very interesting social event. Miss Moore’s orchestra will furnish the dance music: and Bros. A. Sawyer, H. Miller, S. J. Spiers, W. Lewis, T. G. Lawless, and R. Johnston have been" appointed M.C.’s. The catering is in the hands of Mr. A. P. Hailey. .Doubtless the social will be largely patronised as a pleasant wind up. to race day.

Minor improvements have been effected in one or two local hotels. The private bar of the Coronation Hotel has been practically doubled in size, and compares favorably for accommodation with any in'town. At the Masonic Hotel the painters are at work. The billiard room has been renovated throughout and a. table reclothed, whilst new oilcloth adds to the appearance of the apartment. Re-papering and painting is brightening up the private bar.

With the aid of a. stout team of oxen, Mr. J. Somervell, contractor, has performed a smart bit of work in transferring a building bodily from the rear of the Poverty Bay Club to a site in Disraeli street. The telegraph poles were negotiated with difficulty, but the gear was admirably constructed. and with the exception of a shaft breaking when crossing the footpath, the feat was accomplished without a hitch. The removal was necessitated through alterations to the Club buildings.

Some of the cabbies and owners of vehicles consider it an imposition that they have to provide, tlieir own numbers after paying tiie license. “I consider the Council should provide us with numbers on official discs,” growled one man when paying liis license fee. “It- does not take fire minutes to have the number painted on,” retorted the Town Clerk, “and the expense is trivial.” ' “All the more reason why the Council should see to it,” commented the Jehu as he took his departure.
