Wo understand that Dr. Alexander Stewart, who had intended to take up his residence in Gisborne, lias entered into, partnership with l)r. Stopford, of Auckland. He left for the northern city yesterday 1 morning. Colonel Hume, who has been in Gisborne on business connected with the local gaol, Jgft for Napier by the Waikare yesterday evening. The Hon. Wi Pore left by the Waikare for Wellington last night. Mr. It. It. Martin, organising secretary of the Political Reform League, left for Napier last night. A farewell social was tendered to Mr R. Cole on Tuesday evening last, on the occasion of his severing his connection with the Ma'kauri school. Miss Faubert, on behalf of the school children, presented Mr Cole with a useful rocking chair and a silver match-box. He was also the recipient of a handsome entree dish and
: cake dish, the gift of the .householders, Mr T. McGregor, chairman of the School Committee, making the presentation. Mr J. C. Field read an illuminated address which is to be presented to Mr Cole when fully signed by the committee. A very pleasing function took place at Harry’s Brewery yesterday morning when Mr. D. J. Barry was presented by the staff with a very handsome gentleman’s dressing-case. The -presentation was made by Mr. Cussen, the brewer, who spoke of the high esteem in which Mr. Barry was held by the whole of . his employees, and he wished Mrs. Barry and himself “God-speed,and a happy return.” Mr. Barry, in reply,, said ho knew his interests would be well looked after during his absence, ho having the fullest. .confidence in bis staff. The proceedings concluded with three cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Barry. i Our Wellington correspondent telegraphs that FaGiiiy {jowls, who lias been ill for sonic days, is in a critical 1 condition,' and that Mr. Wilford, M.H.R., who has been poorly for some, time past, is suffering from an internal trouble, a;ul is to-day confined to his bed. Mr. Hall-Jones is slowlv improving in health, but it is doubtful if he will ever again’bo able to take such an active interest in tli e colony’s adminstrative affairs as he has done in the past. Indeed, it is stated that he is quite prepared to resign if his colleagues think he should. In any case there is some talk of his going on a long holiday to England and Japan. In the event of his resignation it is generally understood thajt Mr. Laurenson will enter the Cabinet
