A SEVERE FROST.

Press Association.

CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday. Readings at tho Christchurch Observatory show that tho frost last night has been the severest for the last six years. Water taps were frozen all over tho town, and in many hotels tho aerated water was frozen to solid lumps, ginger ale and lemonade moro particularly. The parks wero covered with white frost, and in the gardens every leaf capable of being affected by frost, even plants usually considered fairly hardy, has gone down. Up to a few days ago a good many “trumpet” lilies were in bloom, but now flower, leaf and even the stem are masses of pulp. There are blocks of ice on the river, and the cold this morning was very intense—that is as cold is experienced in the usually mild Christchurch.
