CHARITABLE AID MATTERS.

_■■■■ Press Association. DUNEDIN, yesterday. At a meeting of the Charitable Aid Board a motion was passed giving the Maniototo, Waihemo, Clutlia, anri Bruce counties tlie right to distribute their own charitable aid. Tuapelta, Waikouaiti, Taieri, and Vincent counties are to distribute their funds through the Board; those of Dunedin subui'bs and the Peninsula to bo through the medium of Benevolent Trustees as heretofore. _ Tlie Committee of the Charitable Aid Board appointed to report upon a suggestion from the Patients and Prisoners Aid Society that the Society be incorporated as a separate institution under the Act for the purpose of establishing a home for inebriates, stated that a deputation from tlie Society had met the Committee when tlie subject was fully discussed. The Committee had also taken the advice of tho Board’s solicitor, and had conferred with tlio Inspector-General of Hospitals. Tile Committee considered that the J- a " tients and Prisoners Aid Society had hardly realised the difficulties and exponses of establishing and maintaining such a home for inebriates that would meet the requirements of the district. Experience- elsewhere had proved these institutions to be costly, and as a rule in the end failures. There was no evidence to show that the public were prepared to provide the necessary funds, and the Committee was of opinion that were such an institution started in the district the cost would eventually fail largely on tlie Board. In view of other more worthy and moro urgent calls being likely shortly to be made on the Board’s finances for providing an infectious diseases hospital and a consumption hospital, and strengthened further by the strong adverse opinion to the scheme of the Inspector-General' of Hospitals, the Committee recommended the Board to oppose the application of the Society for incorporation as a separate institution. The Chairman stated the Inspector-General of Hospitals nos of opinion that the establishment of ail inebriates’ home would be an expensive experiment. Mr. Millar moved that the Committee be instructed to oppose tho effort of tlie Society to havo an Inebriates’ Homo established. The motion was carried.
