CULTIVATION OF FLAX.

WELLINGTON, yesterday. The' Government has adopted a comprehensive scheme for the drainage of Piako swamp between Thames and. Waikato. A sum of £6OOO will be placed on the Estimates as. a first instalment of the money required to carry out the scheme. . It is proposed to" start operation’s in September next. Areas are to be set apart for’ ,flax cultivation, and the balance of tbe land drained will be available for settlement.
