A curious instance of what' might be termed the “homing” instinct of the Maori in cases of sickness and accident, occurred recently. A To Reinga native, -while in Gisborne, was thrown from liis horse and sustained serious injuries. Instead of getting him attended to on the spot his mate packed him all the way from Gisborne to Wairoa for medical aid, when it was found that he was suffering from dislocation of the left hip, a broken rib, and severe bruises and contusions.
