CREMATION.
A deputation from the Council of tho Auckland Cremation Society, consisting of Messrs M. 'M. AlcCallum
(president), It. It.’ Hunt (lion, sec.), J. H.- Graham, and Dr. J. S. Purdy (District Health Officer), waited upon the Alayor (Mr. A. M. Alyers) recently, with reference to the establishment of a crematorium in Auckland. Air. AlcCallum said that they desired to impress on the Alayor the desirability of the Council erecting a crematorium in Auckland. In Wellington the -citizens subscribed £SOO and the Council provided the remainder of the cost, £550, and provided a site in the cemetery, in addition to arranging for the maintenance and working of the .crematorium. He suggested that the matter should be similarly taken up in Auckland. Dr. J. S. Purdy, referring especially to the sanitary aspect of the question, said that experts in public health the world over were firmly convinced that cremation was more hygienic than earth burial. In Auckland there were alternatives ,of burial in clay %r volcanic soil. In the former decomposition occupied 12 years, in the latter about 12 months, but either might be a menace to the people living in the neighborhood. ■Air AlcCallum explained that without the assistance of the Council the Council had been unable to - make headway, and when the Council was previously approached they threw cold water on it.
Mr. Hunt stated that already £4O had been subscribed by half a dozen members. They were satisfied that they could obtain the £SOO equal t< the amount subscribed in Wellington, if the Council would guarantee to provide the remainder, required. . The Mayor said that if £SOO were subscribed by 'the public, the Society would find tliat the - Council would endeavor to .give effect to their desires. „ He suggested that they should come forward with a definite scheme
showing what buildings and apparatus were required. He believed that the scheme would then receive sympathetic attention, and, speaking for himself, he said lie was in sympathy with their proposal.
The deputation thanked the Mayor and withdrew, undertaking to bring a scheme before the Council.
