A special meoting of the Federal Cabinet considered a cable from Mr: Deakin regarding mail matters. 'Sir. John Forrest gave no information beyong-stating that the Government were in a position to negotiate finally for extension of the /Vancouver service. He hoped to make a statement 01 the subject shortly.
Press Association. * • WELLINGTON,. yesterday. ’ The Acting-Postmaster-General announces that advice has been‘received front the resident agent at San Fran- , cisco for the New Zealand Government that the first stoamer of the Weir line is expected to leave San Francisco on August- 30th for Auck- - land," possibly by way of Apia. Steamers will leave every four weeks %. thereafter, and will carry American mails. The voyage is expected to occupy twenty-four days.
