HOCKEY

A meeting of tho Poverty Bay Hockey Association was held at tho Royal Hotel last night. A letter was rocoived from tho Manawatu Hockey Association, stating that a representative toam was boing sent on tour, and that probably a match could bo arranged Gisborno on tho team’s homeward trip. A favorable reply was sent-. It was decided to grant the ground from 2 to 3 o’clock on Thursday for tho return j football match, Hairdressers v. Jockeys.

The Hostings Indies’ hockey team played a team of hoys from the Taruheru Collage at Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon. It was an ideal day for hockey, and promptly at 3 o’clock the teams lined out. The To Kooti (Hastings) team was the same ns played yesterday. The College team was ns follows:—Geo. Kells, Nolan, Winter, J. Bellerbv (captain), J. Tiff on, H. Partridge, E. Partridgo, Ormerod, R. Partridge, Morgan, and A. Roller by. Fi om the bully-off the game was made fast by the College players, who were bent on tiring the ladies out in the first spell. Ormerod aifd Morgan carried play to Te Kooti’s line, where Miss Danvers relieved with a powerful drive, which found the. line. The Misses Shnttky and Warren carried play into the College quarters, where Nolan, by fine defensive play, cleared his line. The College boys attacked, a fine dribbling rush in which R. Partridge, Ormerod,- ami R. Bollerby shono out prominently, taking the ball into the visitors’ circle, where a certain score was frustrated by the fine play of Miss O’Reilly. The ladies, by a fine effort, succeeded in transferring play to. the other end of the field, and Miss Cora Humphries carried 'the ball inside the College circle. After a brief battle for possession. Miss Humphries had a shot at goal, 'and had hard luck in striking the post, the ball going outsido. The Partridgo brothers were instrumental in clearing their line, and took the ball well up the field, where Ormerod. who was playing well, gained pos session, and after a good run, drove the ball cleanly between tbe uprights scoring the first goal. This reverse caused the Te Kooti -team to rally, and for a time the ball was kept flying from one end of the field to the other. The Misses Beeliam, Wall, Shattky, and Hayes were “grafting” hard and s’ucceeded in working the ball on to the College line, where they kept up a spirited attack, over-eagerness on the part of their forwards preventing them from scoring. Geo. IColls, goal-keeper for the College team, proved himsoTf the right man in the right place, his coolness saving the situation on many occasions. Nolan and Winter eventually succeeded in clearing their line of danger, and a fine forward rush carried play well 'into their opponents’ territory. Miss Jones brought relief by a timely drive to the boundary. The visitors attacked hotly, the Misses Humphries, Beehan,. and Hay, by a fine passing rush, carrying play within the homo‘team’s circle, where J. Bellerbv, the College captain, saved, arid dribbling" strongly, took the ball the whole length of the ground, and scored a splendid goal amidst great applause. From this out the Te Kooti team fought a great fight, and although the first spell had been too fast for-them they stuck pluckily to their guns and succeeded in preventing any further score. ... ; For. the boys, Nolan, J. Belle'by, and Tiffen played well of the backs, and Geo. Kells made a very safe goal-keeper, doing what came his way in a very cool manner. All the forwards worked well, Nolan perhaps being a little more brilliant than his fellows.

For -the losers Miss O’Reilly, as goal-keeper, played very well, and the full-backs, Misses Danvers and Humphries, di da lot of useful work on defence. The .half-backs all toiled with a will. The two wing-for-wards, Misses Shattky and Beehan, played ''fine games and Miss Cora Humphries in the centre did a lot of attacking being ably backed up by the rest of the forwards. Two spells of 35 minutes each were played. : ~ Mr. Brown controlled the game to. the satisfaction of all present, .and Messrs. Cockerill and T. Harding held the line flags.

On Monday evening tlie visiting hockey ladies «and local ladies and friends spent a most enjoyable evening at Mrs. 'R. N. Jones’ residence, Whataupoko. '■ • . • The team leaves this evening by the Miowera for their homes, after some interesting play and a pleasant holiday. Tho local ladies intend returning the-visit about the end of next month.
