support the agitation' for legislation against adulteration of wines, which is ruining the viticultural industiy. Half a million flocked to Montopeliier, where a monster peaceful demonstration was held yesterday. Cine hundred special trains brought pt-ople from beyond a radius of 24 miles. The organisers stipulated that those within that distance should walk or ride in carts.
The bislioff placed the cathedral taffd churches at- the organisers’ disposal to accommodate women and children unable to find lodgings. - Marcellin Albert, leader of the movement, himself a peasant, enjoined that the strictest sobriety .should bo observed by his followers, lost their cause w'as injured. He emphasised his advice by protesting agaihst the needless presence of 10.030 troops.. No intoxicants were sold. Tlie peasants -carried '.miniature coffins, guillotines, black flags and' banners, bearing the inscriptions: “Soldiers, do not fire on your brothers, who are. famishing.” - They marched in pioeession through the' streets of Montpellier.
