NEW COUNCIL CHAMBERS
A STEP FORWARD,
“We are beginning to got tired of those old premises,” said the Mayor at last evening’s Borough Council meeting, when the subject of a new building was reached. Tho building inspector (Mr. Little) submitted draft plans of a suitable building, the cost not to exceed £2,000. The two sites under discussion were the site donated by the Government, situated at the rear of the Government offices, with a .frontage to Lead’s Quay and Childers Road, anil that, adjoining the Fire Brigade Station, at the corner of Palmerston road and Read’s Quay, adjacent to the Whataupoko bridge. Cr. Williams: We want the latter site for a power house. Cr. Whinray: A microbe destructor you mean ? (Laughter.) Cr. Sheridan advocated the selection of the Childers Road site, as central anil convenient. Later on, when they wanted a Town Hall—(“Oil!”) —the other section would be suitable. The Mayor also favored this selection. —Agreed to. Regarding plans, a question was asked whether it was necessary to put them into an architect’s hands, but the Council thought they could safely be left to the Building; Inspector, who was then instructed, to pre-
pare plans and specifications. These will be submitted to the Council after next meeting.
