COURSING

LOCAL CLUB FORMED,

Devotees of the sport of - coursing are numerous in this district, and to promote interest in pastime a preliminary meeting was ’held at the Royal Hotel last evening, Dr. Collins presiding over a good attendance.

After discussion it was unanimously decided to form a Plumpton Coursing Club for the Poverty Bay district.

It was reported that encouraging promises of support had been given, and 34 members were eurolled at tho outset.

Mr. G. Johnstone was elected secretary and Mr. Joe Martin treasurer. The matter of providing a plumpton course was considered, and Messrs. Kininmont, Maher, Newton, Morso, Paterson, and the secretary wero doputed to inspect sites. Members confidently anticipate that their efforts will result in a first-class ground being _ secured for the “meets,” aud ris tliero are said to be 51 hounds in the district some excellent coursing should eventuate. It may bo explained that a plumptou course is an enclosed one. Accommodation is provided for tho spectators near the spot where the dogs are loosed from tho leash, and means of outlet are given to afford tho lusty hares “a sporting chance.”

Tho meeting appointed a committee to canvass tile district for support, and the subscription was fixed at £1 Is.

A further, meeting will be held in about three weeks’, time, when officers will bo appointed.
