NEW ZEALAND COPPER
Mr. Edwin Bray, mine manager for the Maorilaml Copper Company, Limited, reports:—United Mine: No. 7
level has been extended 73 feet for the month, making a total of 1079 feet. The face is now under the chute of ore in the. No. 5 level where the winze has been begun. The drive has exposed the walls of the ore-body with elvanite and stains of copper. I am. of opinion the ore body is close at hand, but it may have made a more southerly strike, which will make it somewhat later before it comes to hand. No. 5 level has been thoroughly drained before starting, the winze well puddled with clay to prevent the entrance of the water into the working. This winze is now down 7 feet, and shows two feet of good ore in the distance sunk, which promises well oil further sinking. Monster Aline,: No. 1 winze is now down 10 feet (more ore is showing in the bottom there during the last 20 feet). No. 2 winze lias been sunk to a total deptli of G feet at the western end of the outcrop. This work has been done when there has been a spare hand available. The lode is much stronger here, but the copper contents are low.
Champion Aline: I am now getting mining timber preparatory to reopening the surface level and draining the water before starting to unwater the shaft. This work may discover some of. the rich native copper and which might lead to the opening up of chute of copper yot to be worked and traced.
