In regard to tho football team for Australia, Eckhold and Paton are the only two with whom Aucklanders are not familiar. Tho most notablo Auckland absentees are Geo. Smith and G. Nicholson. Tho Auckland three-quarter has been playing right at tho top of his form this season, and his non-inclusion comes as a big surprise to followers of tho gamo in this city. Probably tho reason for tho dropping of Smith and Nicholson was that thoir work did not como under the eyo of tho selectors in the inter-island match. No exception can bo taken to any of the threequarters included, and a matter for congratulation is that- three of the four—Fryer, Mitchisson, and Divo—are young players. Colman, who is picked as reserve half-back, played on tho wing against Auckland last year, but is regarded as equally good as half-back, and can play in' the three-quarter line if necessary. He will be available as wing should Gillet become incapacitated. Tho forwards are considered as good a lot as ever left tho colony. They are heavy, fast, and clever all through—the finest of scrummagers, quick to break

up, and always on the ball. Local opinion is that it will be a good pack that outplays them.
