TE KOOTI v. WANDERERS*WIN FOR THE VISITORS. At AGctoria Domain yesterday af-, ternoon the Te Kooti (Hastings) ladies’ hockey team met and defeated the AVandcrcrs (Gisborne) team by 4 goals to nil. - " Following was the Te Kooti team: Goal, Miss Elliott; full-backs, Misses O Reilly (captain) and Danvers; halves, Misses Wall and Humphries; ccntro-lialf, Miss Jones; forwards, Misses E. Sliattky, AVarren, Hayes’ C. Humphries, and Beelian. The weather was very cold, and towards the close of the game a slight dtizzle set in, much to the discomfort of tho few spectators who were present. From tho bully-off tlie Wanderers set up an attack on To Kooti’s goal, Miss E. Jones making a fine effort to scoie, Miss Elliott (the goal-keeper for Hastings) saving the situation by a fine drive to tho boundary. M.iss Cora Humphries put in some good work for Te Kooti, and succeeded in transferring tho scene of battle to the other end of the field. Gish Dime with a fine rush, in which Miss Grace AVarren and Miss E. Jones shone out, had Te Kooti’s line in danger, but by a fine dribbling rush Miss Cora Humphries -again brought timely relief.. Tho To Kooti’s vanguard by firm play -
monacod tho local toam’s base, and Miss D. Fyson had a busy time of it in guarding her goal. Tho visitors, who wore playing with more combination and a great doal more dash than they displayed on the preceding day, vigorously renewed tho attack, and tho Gisborne backs woro kept strictly on tho defensivo. Misses M. Winter and V. Simpson woro instrumental in clearing their line, and drove the ball well up tho field, whore Miss It. Danvers, one of To Ivooti’s fullbacks, stopped tho attack by driving the ball out at contro. Misses Warren and Hay for tho visitors put in some useful work, and brought tho play back to the Wanderers* goallino, whero a fierce tussle ensued, and Miss Jones narrowly missed hitting a goal. Miss Cora Humphries brought play back again, and the Gisborneites woro kept at work defending. Tho Wnnderors nindo strenuous efforts to clear thoir lino, and at last Misses V. Walters, D. Osborne, and M. AVinter succeeded in shifting play to thoir opponents’ goal, whero chance after chance was thrown away through tho Wanderers not following up. They appeared to bo content to lot ono player do all the fighting insido tho circle, and stood outside watching with apparont interest tho battle against long odds. After some central play tho visitors again attacked, and Miss Wall had a shot at goal, which wont outside the post. Miss V. Simpson gained possession and made a fine run, dribbling tho ball past three of her opponents, and then centring in good style. Miss Danvers saved with a finj drive. Miss D. Osborne called forth rounds of applause for her clever footwork, being penalised for kicking the ball. Taking the ball from the centre of the field, Miss Cora Humphries dribbled right through tho opposing players, and scored a splendid goal. Tho Misses V. and G. Warren next showed up prominently, taking the ball from their line well up the ground, but the visitors were not to be denied, and a determined attack enabled Miss E. Shattky to shoot a fine goal; Half-timo was then called. Upon resuming it was apparent that the Wanderers lacked the experience and condition of tho visitors, who came to the attack with great spirit. Tlio local ladies played with great determination, and some fine defensive work was done by the backs.- Misses V. Simpson and «H. Hooper carried play well up the field, sprinting in groat style. Miss O’Eeilly succeeded in stemming the onslaught, and sent the ball back again. Miss D. Osborne next came
through with the ball, and looked like scoring, but the fine defensive ' play of the visitors and the lack of scoring powers on the part of the local team frustrated their efforts. Miss Cora Humphries, who was playing a fine game for the visiting team, cleared her lino in good style, rushing the ball into her opponents’ territory. Miss D. Fyson saved with a nice piece of work. Resuming the attack with vigor, the Te Kooti vanguard again had the home line in danger, and Miss “Warren drove the ball cleanly between the uprights, registering Te Kooti’s third goal. After some vigorous attacking on the part of the visitors and stubborn defence by the Gisborne team, Miss Beehaai dent the ball once again between the posts. No-side was then sounded, Te Kooti proving victorious by 4 goals to nil. From a spectacular point of view the game yesterday was far in advance of the preceding day’s match. The Te Kooti ladies played with great combination, and showed afar better knowledge of the game than they evinced in their match against the Gisborne team. The Wanderers team after a few games together, in which they will acquire better combination and better form, should prove a harder team to beat than they were yesterday. Mr. Brown made a capital referee, carrying, out his duties in a capable manner, while Messrs. E. C. SelwynHamlin and Smith were the line umpires.
