CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday,

A peculiar accident, occurred to-day in connection with the north express. Just before arriving at a crossing between Bryndwr and Papanui the train was stopped by a woman, who had observed a gap of six or eight inches in one of the rails, a piece having been broken off. Tho train was run slowly over the gap, but hud it been travelling at full speed a horrible accident might have occurred. No explanation has been given as to how tho rail was broken, and the piece of metal is missing. Several trains pasesd before the express, but observed nothing, and the line inspector and ganger failed to notice the gap in the morning.
