THE MORGUE
IMPROVEMENTS TO BE MARE
The District Health Officer presented a report to the Borough Council at its meeting last night regarding his recent visit to Gisborne. In the course of his remarks Dr. DeLislo stated:—“l regret to say that in many respects it is eminently unsuitable. The light is defective, and wlion a post mortem examination, is boing conducted light is a most important requisite.” Ho recommended that better lighting bo provided oithor by two windows, one on each side of the building, or two skylights in the roof; that gas be laid on to facilitate the work when it had to be done at night; and that water be laid on as soon as the service was available. A further recommendation was that the floor be freshly concreted so as to present a smooth even surface with a proper fall. This, he held, was essentia], as the present rough surface facilitated the retention of microbes. A stone slab, marble for preferance, was needed. The Mayor said the building had answered very well hitherto. Cr. Williams moved that the recommendation should be carried out. He had had to do a post mortem there and found it an exceedingly difficulty and unpleasant job with the lack of conveniences. Cr. Sheridan thought it ‘'rather at large order” all at once, but the mover maintained that all the conveniences mentioned were necessary. Cr. Miller seconded. Cr. Sawyer said that even if there were only one case in five years the place should be brought up-to-date for use. The motion was carried.
