PERSONAL..

There are now only eight life members of the Leislative Council living. They are: The Hons. VV. D. H. Baillie (appointed 1861), C'. C. Bowen (1891), C. J. Johnston (1891), G. McLean (1881), Sir H. J. Miller (1885), J- D.Ormond (1891), H. Scotland (1868), and E. C. J. Stevens (J 1882). A Press Association telegram from Gore states that Mr. Robert Smith, aged 81, an old and respected settler of Waikaka Valley, was found dead yesterday behind a fence on his farm. Colonel Ricardo, the Queensland Military Commandant, fell from his horse on Monday when following the hounds, and fractured the base of his skull. He is in a critical state. In taking his seat on the Borough Council last night, Mr. W. Pettie was warmly welcomed. The Mayor, whilst deploring the sad event which necessitated the by-election, said he was very glad to welcome Mr. Pettie as a member. As a representative of Kaiti the new member would, he was sure, worthily fulfil the place of the late lamented Mr. Harding. He would find plenty of work to do, and the old councillors would be very pleased to assist him in every possible way. (Applause.) In returning thanks, Cr. Pettie said no one regretted the sad circumstances necessitating the election more than lie did. Now that he had joined the Council ho could only assure them that he would use every . endeavor to carry out his duties faithfully and well.
