WELLINGTON, yesterday

The weather is blustery for the holiday, which is being pretty generally observed. The only holiday features are the races at Otaki and football match in town.

CHRISTCHURCH, yesterday

The holiday is l#ing observed as a close one by nearly everybody. Canterbury College is celebrating Empire Pay as well as the Prince’s Birthday, as the former celebrations could not take place owing to the vacation. Mr. G. W. Bussell, the Chairman, and representatives of all the public bodies, were present, Patriotic

speeches were delivered to a lai go audience. The weather is glorious. The ground is in excellent order for the North v. South Island football match, which is exciting keen interest in ’the city, O’Leary (Wairarapa) replaces Dive (Taranaki) in the North team.

BLENHEIM, yesterday

Empire celebrations are being held at Springlands, near Blenheim, today, one thousand school children of all denominations taking part. The whole fete was splendidly organised. A band was in attendance. Hundreds of adults, were present. Twenty pounds was spent in prizes and fifty pounds on the catering arrangements. The weather is perfect. ASHBURTON, yesterday.

Owing to'Empire Day having been observed as a close holiday,' there was no holiday here to-day. Only the banks and Government offices closed.

DUNEDIN, yesterday.

The weather is beautifully fine today, and a close holiday is being observed.

WANGANUI,, last night.

The holiday passed off quietly in good weather. A seven-a-side football tournament was won by Pirates. In the hockey match, St. Paul’s (Wanganui) beat Palmerston North Old Boys. The shooting for the battalion shield resulted in a win for Peilding, Palmerston North being second, and Wanganui Rifles third. INVERCARGILL, last flight.

The weather was fine and genial for the holiday, though the sky was ■threatening. Half the town kept the holiday but most of the retailers kept open and the day was characterised as a holiday.

AUCKLAND, last night.

The banks and insurance offices closed to-day, as did a few business places. The telephone office observed holiday hours, while those telegraph and telephone offices which usually close on holidays opened for business between 9 and 10 this morning. The holiday attraction ■of today was A.R.C. Great Northern Steeplechase. ■ •

NELSON, last night.

To-day was generally observed as a holiday. A six aside hockey tournament attracted a large number in the morning. A seven aside football tournament attracted a still larger number in the afternoon when fourteen competed. The Maitai A team won tlio hockey tournament and the Rivals the senior football, and Waimeas the junior football tournament. The farmers’ field day at Wakefield was attended by over a thousand. In the ploughing matches there- was good competition and ill the dog trials R. ,o’Brien’s, of Blenheim, dog, Nass, won the huntaway and slew and the same owner’s dog Watch, won the heading, bringing back and yarding.
