TEMPORARY REPAIRS EFFECTED.
THE NIWARU INCIDENT.
The manager of the Union Co., Mr. T. A. Revell, states that the repairing of the broken piston rod on the Squall has beon temporarily fixed and the vessel will bo able to proceed to Napier at midday to-day. Complete repairs will be effected in Napier or Auckland. With regard to the reported inattention of the Niwaru, Captain Rainey, Marine Superintendent of the Tyser' Co., states the Squall’s signals were observed, but they could not be interpreted. Either they were small or dirty, or they were not the regulation size. The Niwaru had good glasses and telescopes, but the signals could not bo read. Two letters were made out, which seemed to indicate that the ship was in distress, but they were not clear. They signalled the Squall to repeat, but this was not dono.' At 4 p.m., they signalled the shore that a ship was in distress and also blew their whistle. The Squall was only visible from half the deckway of the Niwaru. Between 4.30 and 5 p.m., Captain Rainey went down to the beach and communicated with the ship by means of the Morse system, and had full particulars just at the time the Squall’s boat reached shore.
