PRESENTATION TO A LOCAL SCRIBE.

A pleasing tribute to a popular and capable pressman was tho enthusiastic farewell tondored on Saturday to Mr. J. V. McDonald, late chiof of the reporting staff of our contemporary. The gathering was hold in tho Tuff Club’s room at tho Masonic Hotel, a largo number of roprosontativo business men and sottlors being presont.

The Hon. Captain Tucker, who presided, said that Air. AlcDonald had boon with t'hom for lmlf-a-dozen years and during that time had won universal rcspoct from all persons with whom 110, lmd como in contact, lie strongly commended his accurate and impartial reporting of public mootings. Ho had been absolutely fair and just and only men sitting on a number of public botlios could realise what such careful reporting meant. He had great pleasure in presenting Air. AlcDonald with a slight token of respect. Atv. Rees endorsed tho provious speaker’s remarks and, spoke feelingly of. the esteem and friendship in which Air. AlcDonald was hold, and ho carried with him their best wishes for his future welfare.

Air. AY. D. Lysnar also testified to tho ability and skill which Air. AlcDonald had always displayed in his reports of public matters. He had the happy knack of extracting the kernol of discussion which had taken place and he (the speaker) realised that it was a very difficult thing to do. Air. McDonald would hold his own in his profession wherever ho went. Ho was pleased that Air. Hamilton T. Jones was filling tho vacancy. Ho was known very well and

ho was sure that his roporfing would bo in a lino with his predecessor’s. Air. McDonald, in reply, briefly returned his thanks and said ho was leaving because ho had somo ambitions. He intended, however, to return and sottlo in Now Zealand—ho believed in Air. Seddon’s dictum that this was “God’s Own Country.” All his lifetime had boon spent on the East Coast and ho had groat faith in Its future.

Mr. AV. J. P. Caudiu proposed a ’oto of thanks to the chairman, '.vliicli was carried unanimously. Apologies for absence were receiv'd from the Afayor, Air. J. Townley, Mr. AY. Pettie and Air. F. AA’. Nolan.'
