GISBORNE RIFLES.

INSPECTOR-GENERAL’S VISIT

At tho drill-shed last evening Colonel Davies held an inspection parade of the Gisborne Rifles and Cadets. The corps were put through a series of intricate manoeuvres, and both officers and men acquitted themselves creditably, the cadets especially showing careful training. At the close of tlio inspection Colonel Davies presented a number of the men with the prizes that they had won at shooting. These were the remainder of the prizes that were to have been given out by His Excellency the Governor, at liis welcome ceremony on Tuesday morning last. The following is a list of the successful marksmen: Sergt. Scott, Corp. Holmes, Col-Sergt. Mackerras, Private Hingston, Capt. Somerville, Private Somerville, Private Hay, Private Robb, Quarter-Master-Sergt. A\ Tilliams.

Colonel Davies then addressed a few words of advice to tho corps. He said that lie had expected to find the Rifles more up to date in their drill. Ho was more pleased with the way the cadets got through theirs. Ho knew that the corps labored under many disadvantages, one of which was the size of their hall. The Colonel said that it did not take a large hall for squad drill. He thought that the cadets took more interest jn their work—that they were keener. He said that the men should try to remember that they were volunteers all day long and learn to carry themselves erect and to walk freely. He advised them to learn their drill thoroughly and to learn to movo about like a soldier. The corps was dismissed about half-past nine.
