Received May 24, 1.5 a.m. SYDNEY, May 23. At the wool sales, there was good competition. The market closed steady at yesterday’s firmer rates.

The Colonial Consignment and Distributing Company have received the following cable from London: Canterbury mutton 4id, Napier, Wellington, and North Island 3§d; lamb, first quality s|d, second s£d; beef, hinds 3Jd, fores 3!d. NORTHERN S.S. COMPANY. AUCKLAND, last night. The annual meeting of the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., was held in. the company’s office this morning, Mr. C. Rhodes, chairman of directors, presiding. The 26tli annual report showed! that the net profit on') accounts for the year .ending March 31, after making provision for insurance, depreciation, and boiler accounts, was £9037 11s; transfers, £l9 _l7s 6d; balance brought forward April 1, 1906, £BO6 12s 3d; making a total oit £9863 10s lOd. The following appropriation of this amount was recommended : Payment of a dividend at the rate-of 7 per cent, per annum, half of which was paid to shareholders on November 5,1906 J |£Bf6B! 3s 4d, leaving a balance to be carried to the credit of profit, jand loss, account of £llß2 7s 6d. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. GOLD-MINING RETURN. AUCKLAND, last night. Since March 28tli the Tairua Broken Hills Gold-mining Co. have treated 550 tons of ore for a return ,of bullion of the approximate value of £71,800. The total amount won from the mine to date is £73,12)5.104
