FIRES
Press Association. DUNEDIN, last night. The City Fire Brigade were called yesterday to air outbreak of fire in the premises of the Chemical Stores Company (Mr. W. Taine, manager), in Jervois street. The varnish house at the rear of the main building was in flames, and the* Brigade centred all elieir efforts on that building. The fire was suppressed before it had obtained a good hold of the two-storey-ed building adjoining, and it is as well that the Brigade turned up with such despatch, for a few minutes longer would have sufficed to make the position hopeless as far as the larger building was concerned. The larger building contained quantities of most inflammable chemicals. The varnish house and the ceiling of the lower floor of the store are badly charred. It seems that an explosion took jilace in the varnish house, where there were boiling two jacket-pans of varnish, and.the flames found access to the front store through a couple of windows. Repairs are to be speedily effected, and the business will not be interrupted in any way. The varnish house was not covered by insurance, but the main building and stock are insured for about £6OOO in the New Zealand and Guardian offices.
