FREDERICK MAUGER’S DEATH

CAUSE PROBABLY ANTHRAX.

Press Association

NAPIER, yesterday

Dr. DeLisle, District Health Officer, states that an exhaustive examination was made of the smears from portions of tlio spleen of the late Frederick Mauger, who died at Gisborne, under conditions suggesting plague. The examination did not result in satisfying the investigators that the case was one of plague, but the smears will be sent to Wellington for bacteriological examination. One possible theory is anthrax, as deceased was working amongst hides.
