ALLEGED HORSE-STEALING

At tlio Police Court yesterday Oliver Goldsmith was charged with stealing a horse, the property or .vprahima Taumanau. Accused borrowed a liorso from Apraliima to come on to town. Witness was to bring tho liorso back if accused was not returning. When witnos was leaving on the return journey ho asked accused if ho was coming to Tolaga, and accused did not reply. Ho saw tho liorso at the ltailway Stables. Charles Parker deposed that tho accused came to him on the 13tli inst, and said he wanted to borrow £7 on a chestnut mare. Witness arranged to meet him at Quinn s Stables tho same morning. Ho saw tho mare ,«]id told accused that ho could not lond the monoy, but would buy the maro for £7 and Jojivc him two days in which to pay back tho monoy with £1 interest. Accused agreed to this. Gave witness a receipt for the money. Tho monoy was returned to witness after the accused was arrested on the present chargo. Constable Irwin deposed that ho arrested accused on a charge of horse-stealing on the 16tli inst. Defendant reserved his defence, and was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supremo Court at Gisborne, bail being allowed in two sureties of £SO each.
