Colonel Davies, Inspector-General of the Defence Forces, and Lieuten-ant-Colonel Baucliop, Officer Commanding the district, are expected to arrive in Gisborne from Wairoa tomorrow or Friday. Vice-Admiral Fawkes and Lady Fawkes tendered a dinner to a number of leading Auckland, citizens on H.M.S. Powerful on Monday niglit. The Mayor and Mayoress will entertain His Excellency, Lady Fawkes, and the officers of the squadron at dinner to-night. The Hon. Lancelot Walker, M.L.C., died at his residence at Four Peaks Station, near Geraldine, on Sunday. Deceased had been ailing during the past year, and on that account was not in his place in Parliament last session. Deceased, who was aged 78, arrived in Canterbury from Epgland Tii 1856, and sat in tho House of Representatives for Akaroa and Ashley, and in 1885 was called to tho Council. Mr. and Mrs. Dealdn have started for Paris to join the Orontes at Marseilles. A number of Australians farewelled them.

From a private telegram received in Gisborne the. other day we learn •that tho Hon. Hall-Jones, Minister for Public Works, is making failprogress towards recovery. Mr. H. T. Jones, who has been on a holiday trip in tlie South, returned to Gisborno this morning.
